In 2025, Cornwall and the surrounding region said farewell to two very influential federal figures, Guy Lauzon and Ed Lumley, whose legacies bridged political divides and left lasting impacts on both local and national stages.
Guy Lauzon, who served as Member of Parliament for Stormont-Dundas-South Glengarry from 2004 to 2019, passed away at age 81. Known for his tireless advocacy and deep-rooted commitment to Eastern Ontario, Lauzon helped bring key federal investments to the region, including the Benson Centre, Service Canada jobs in Cornwall, and rural broadband expansion. April 16, Ed Lumley passed away at 85. A towering presence in both politics and business, Lumley was Cornwall’s youngest mayor at age 32 in 1971 and later served in Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau’s cabinet. He simultaneously held office as mayor and MP in 1974, a move no longer permitted under current rules. The Cornwall Civic Complex arena bearing his name is a reminder of his legacy. Lumley was invested into the Order of Canada in 2014, lauded for his business acumen and public service. Both men exemplified public service in distinct ways — Lauzon through grassroots conservatism and regional advocacy, Lumley through cabinet leadership and national business influence. Their passing marked the end of two remarkable eras in SDG history.
