The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 297 raised $41,929 in its 2025 Poppy Campaign, with support from the Cornwall community and 650 hours of volunteer service, reports Poppy Chairperson Mavis Williamson.
More than 250 poppy boxes were distributed across the city during the campaign than ran for just 10 days, shortened by storms. Despite the reduced window, the results were encouraging.
“We are so appreciative of our volunteers and the support from the Cornwall community,” said Williamson. “It’s very inspiring to be able to provide these services to our Veterans, RCMP, and their families.”
One highlight was the doubling in use of electronic “tap” donation boxes, which will continue alongside traditional cash boxes. Funds raised supported local veterans through programs addressing homelessness, transportation, and emergency needs. A bus trip to the Aviation Museum in Ottawa was well received, and over 150 guests attended a Veterans Dinner hosted during Veterans Week.
Donations also went to the St. Joseph’s Care Foundation, the Children’s Christmas Fund, and a retrofit of the branch’s ladies washroom. Support for youth included donations to three Royal Canadian Cadet Corps, books for the Cornwall Public Library, and prizes for literary and poster contests. Sophia Kanagasabai placed second provincially in junior poetry, and four post-secondary bursaries were awarded to children of veterans.
President Marvin Plumadore praised Williamson’s leadership, noting the campaign’s continued positive impact. For more information, call 613-933-2362.
