Seaway Valley Theatre Company (SVTC) celebrated its dedicated volunteers at a 1980s-themed Volunteer Appreciation Event, recognizing the individuals who contribute both onstage and behind the scenes to bring local theatre to life.
Held annually, the event serves as a thank-you to the many people who power the company’s productions — youth performers, tech crews, camp counsellors, board members, and the behind-the-scenes builders who create the physical spaces where stories unfold. Two volunteer awards were presented that evening, recognizing both emerging youth leadership and behind-the-scenes dedication.
The Vanetia Warner Memorial Award, named in honour of a cherished SVTC community member, is given annually by the board of directors to a current youth member who demonstrates consistent dedication and enthusiasm for theatre arts.
The 2024-2025 recipient is Kadence Gault, who has grown from performer to mentor and technical team member. She has been featured in numerous children’s shows and winter musicals and will return to the stage in SVTC’s upcoming production of Cinderella. In addition to her performance work, Gault has expanded her skills backstage, recently serving as the mic cue operator for Roald Dahl’s Willy Wonka JR. She also serves as a youth representative on the SVTC board and has worked as a counsellor for both March Break and summer children’s camps.
“Receiving this theatre award is incredibly meaningful to me,” said Gault. “Over the past eight years, theatre has been a huge part of my life and has shaped who I am both on and off the stage. It taught me confidence, discipline, and the courage to take risks, even when it felt uncomfortable.”
She added that she hopes her journey inspires others to follow their creative passions. “This award reflects years of commitment, passion, and perseverance,” she said. “I hope my journey encourages others to believe in themselves and stay connected to the arts.”
Also presented for the first time was the Shining Light Award, a new honour created in memory of Charlotte Light, a beloved SVTC actor remembered for her warmth, humour, and tireless spirit. The award is intended to recognize adult members-aged 18 and older-who go above and beyond behind the scenes to support the theatre family.
The inaugural recipient is Dennis Durham, a veteran volunteer who has spent years building sets and maintaining the spaces that allow each production to come to life. Known for his steady presence and reliable craftsmanship, Durham is a go-to figure during show builds, tech prep, and general upkeep around the theatre.
“Dennis is one of these volunteers who doesn’t talk much, who you don’t see in the limelight, but who makes sure that everything is in order for everyone,” said Christiane Taylor, SVTC Vice-President and Marketing Chair. “He is a pillar of SVTC. We are fortunate to count him among our team.”
