The first box is the sandbox, a place to play and create. Unfortunately, feral cats tend to ‘do their thing’ in the sandbox. A Jack-in-the-box would scare away any cat intending to do that.
Then comes the school lunch box, containing all the nutritious things Mom packed for little Johnny, to be eaten at noon. However, many were traded for the more attractive junk food brought by classmates. If the child is a Japanese girl with name such Tsumugi, Sui, Himari or Rin, the mid-day nourishment might be contained in a compartmentalized bento box, likely to contain rice, or noodles, with fish and pickled and cooked vegetables. Anglo classmates would utter, “Ugh! Yukk!
If bicycling or working with wood become hobbies, a tool box is a necessity. In the box go pliers, screw driver and can of oil, or a saw, plane, hammer and sandpaper. Yet to come is one that is not only AM and PM, but also large enough to tell which of the 28-31 days of the month it is. Over the horizon is an enormous pill dispenser to accommodate as many as 366 daily doses.
I’ll stay with the light slant of this column by not elaborating on that last box that comes at the end of life. It’s usually about 84″ long, 28″ wide and 23″ high – but larger if you’re a basketball player or sumo wrestler who didn’t succeed in following the Atkins, intermittent fasting, Keto or Weight Watchers’ diets.
