The Cline House Gallery hosted its fourth annual Words of Art event, welcoming writers, artists, and community members for a day of creative exchange inspired by the gallery’s Annual Juried Show. The exhibition, which ran from January 29 to February 28, provided the foundation for both the morning French session and the afternoon English session, each drawing strong attendance.
The English program featured 20 presenters, including singer-songwriter Keegan Larose, who performed an original piece inspired by Elisabeth Hewlett’s painting Familiar. Larose said the artwork immediately sparked a narrative for him. “There was a story jumping out at me… a woman in her twilight years starting to lose her memory and trying to recount her life through people visiting her, photographs, videos,” he explained. His acoustic performance added a musical dimension to the afternoon lineup, which also included readings and reflections from Ginette Guy Mayer, Ken Smith, Lorna Foreman, Patrick Berger, Jacquie Milner, and others. Event coordinator Emily MacLeod said Words of Art continues to grow while maintaining its intimate, collaborative feel. “We invite local writers to come in, select a piece that inspires them, and respond with language,” she said. “It’s a beautiful conversation in creativity. The artists have spoken in images, and the writers are here to respond with words.” As each writer presented, the corresponding artwork was displayed, creating a shared space where visual and literary expression met. Organizers noted that the event revealed the many ways people experience the same piece, whether through story, memory, music, or emotion, and that watching those interpretations unfold in real time sparked a sense of curiosity and discovery in the room.
