The Seaway Valley Theatre Company’s Act II Seniors Theatre is set to return with its fourth annual showcase, bringing a mix of humour, creativity, and lived experience to the stage this April.
Performances will take place April 7, 11, and 12 at 2:00 p.m. at Seaway Valley Theatre, featuring a cast of local performers aged 55 and older. Directed by Cathy Durham and produced by Josée Julien, the production continues a format that has resonated with audiences in past years.
“It’s pretty much the same as what we’ve done in the past. We’re going to have some skits, some monologues, and we’ll do a choral piece as well,” said Durham.
The ensemble includes about a dozen performers, ranging in age from their mid-50s to over 80, combining both experienced actors and newcomers. “We have some people who are veterans of the theatre… and we have some who are very, very new to this and have always wanted to do it,” Durham said.
Beyond entertainment, the program aims to challenge perceptions about aging. “We fight that ageism all the time,” she said. “Our seniors are enthusiastic… they love the socialized aspect as well as using their heads.”
The showcase also emphasizes personal growth and confidence. “I love watching them transform, watching them have confidence,” Durham added. “They are gutsy to get up there… and they’re going for it.”
Audiences can expect a lively mix of scripted and improvised moments, including a group skit featuring the entire cast as a basketball team. “It’s kind of another bonding episode that we have, and they love it,” Durham said.
Tickets are $10, with an optional wine and cheese add-on available for the April 11 performance for an additional $15.
As the group prepares to take the stage once again, Durham is confident the performers will deliver. “We want our seniors to blow the audience away with their talent… they’re going to knock their socks off.”
Tickets are available online, by phone, and at the door (subject to availability).
