Police services from across the region joined forces for a Fill-a-Cruiser food drive supporting the Ahkwesáhsne Mohawk Board of Education’s Backpack Program.
The event brought together the Akwesasne Mohawk Police Service, Cornwall Police Service, Ontario Provincial Police, and Royal Canadian Mounted Police to collect food and monetary donations for students facing food insecurity.
Pete Thorne, Provincial Liaison Officer with the OPP East Region, said the initiative stemmed from a direct need. “They came back and said the Akwesasne Mohawk school had lost its funding for the school backpack program,” he said. “Today is a great day to unite SDG, Cornwall, and Akwesasne into one larger community.”
The Backpack Program provides students with food for weekends and school breaks, helping remove barriers to learning.
RCMP Constable Marc Villeneuve praised community support. “Any efforts that we can help to contribute to supporting the community is a worthwhile cause,” he said, adding, “Customers have been so generous and helpful that we should be very proud of our community.”
