A new Cornwall secondary school is one step closer to becoming a reality now that the Ontario government has given the green light to the Upper Canada District School Board to issue tenders for the school that will be built on the north-east side of Nick Kaneb Drive and Marleau Avenue.
At the same time, the province announced it was increasing funding for the project by an additional $46,166,868, bringing the total funding to just over $85 million. When costs associated with land acquisition and the outdoor space are factored in, the total investment will exceed $97.5 million.
The province had back in 2017 announced it was providing $39 million for the new school, that will be called Cornwall Collegiate and Vocational School, consolidating students from the current CCVS and St. Lawrence Secondary School under one roof.
The facility will have 1,400 pupil spaces, two double gyms, a track and field facility and green space. There will be bright, modern classrooms with designated spaces for technical/trades learning and Indigenous education.
The school had been designed with growth and sustainability in mind. The projected opening date for the school is September 2029.
“SDG is growing, and it’s critical that the resources our families depend on grow right along with it,” said Nolan Quinn, MPP for Stormont-Dundas-South Glengarry. “The new, modern Cornwall Secondary School will ensure parents and children have access to a high-quality education that sets them up for successful, prosperous futures.”
“We are thrilled to reach the next milestone in the realization of the new Cornwall 7-12 Secondary School which will be transformational for students in our community,” said Ron Ferguson, Director of Education of the UCDSB.
“Whether they be preparing for their next steps in their education journey, or training for the jobs of the future, this state-of-the-art facility will offer our students an enhanced learning environment.”
It will be the first English public secondary school built in Cornwall in over 50 years.
