The Editor,
I want to commend Councillor Ngoundjo, Councillor Hollingsworth, and Mayor Towndale for voting against a salary increase for Cornwall City Council.
As Councillor Hebert pointed out, the average councillor workload is about 20 hours per week, which supports that this is a part-time role.
This term of Council has already given itself nearly a 30% increase, that makes it even harder to justify another pay increase, and this is now the third time salary increases have been discussed.
It’s also important to look at the bigger picture. Since this term of Council took office, the City’s debt has grown from roughly $52 million to over $100 million.
That should concern every taxpayer. I agree with Councillor Ngoundjo’s comments that residents are already dealing with tough economic times, rising costs, all while also being on the hook for this growing debt. It is time to expect fiscal responsibility at City Hall.
