The second annual Photo Art Show by the Glengarry Encore Photo Club was held at the Sandfield Centre in Alexandria, with exhibits by 20 local photographers.
In addition to the display of works, guest speakers discussed the art and business of photography.
The Club was organized over ten years ago, bringing together photographers weekly to discuss their work and broaden their knowledge of photographic techniques. The group participates in community studio projects, as well as day trips to locations to shoot various subjects. Members can be seen all over Glengarry taking photos at places and events, while some travel to other countries and exotic destinations to find their subjects.
Greg Byers said his display comprised of photos which reflected either strong graphic composition or spontaneity from people on the street. When he travels, he is inspired by the visual surprises he encounters. At home, he has become so used to passing by the same landscapes and places that they just don’t grab his attention the same as a new vacation spot. His selection focused on a recent trip to Mexico, with the sites and people he encountered while on vacation.
John Salib finds inspiration in his natural surroundings and focuses on the beauty of spaces that might go unnoticed. Salib captured the perfect starburst of sunlight through fall-coloured leaves and the soft textures of clouds above soaring trees. His photos invite the viewer down a long set of train tracks or dream of flying to a vacation spot. Salib finds the weekly meetings, that run from the fall to the end of spring, provide great opportunity for discussion and comradery with like-minded photographers.
Dick Budge never seems to be without his camera. Budge photographs various subjects and events, but found his true passion lies in capturing people, each for their unique expressions that often say much more than any words. Budge also likes to take photos in black and white, where shadows, highlights and texture make the impact, without colour to steal the focus.
This show offered the opportunity for networking and conversation between experienced and budding photographers. It provided a forum for those photographers who are keen on the latest technology in cameras, for those who like to use the camera on their cell phones and for those who love to work with traditional film. And it gave the chance for the photographers to showcase their incredible talent, inviting attendees to view the world through their lenses.
