The Border Town Challenge wrapped up its 10th anniversary spring hockey tournament series in Cornwall with a girls hockey weekend.
Organized by Own The Ice Hockey, the annual tournament brings teams from Ontario, Quebec, and the United States to the region, using Cornwall’s location near the borders as a hub for competitive spring hockey. The 2026 edition expanded across four weekends, beginning April 17 and featuring multiple age groups and divisions before concluding with U9, U11, U13, and U15 girls divisions. “It’s grown in to major event,” said Brock McBride, President of Own The Ice Hockey. “We have four weekends in total now, and we’re just finishing up with the girls weekend. It’s nice to see a lot of local families be able to come out and get good competitive games.” McBride said the tournament welcomed nearly 200 teams this year, with participants travelling from across Canada and the United States. McBride said the tournament also provides an economic boost for Cornwall.
“When you bring this many people into the city, you’re going to see a boost in tourism with hotels, restaurants, gas stations, and everything,” he said. McBride said the tournament is spread out due to ice and hotel availability, with approximately 50 teams competing each weekend.
