The Township of North Glengarry plans to move forward with initiatives to improve Island Park and Fireman’s Island.
Community Services Director Stephanie MacRae presented a proposal to council members that includes the removal of the gazebo on Fireman’s Island and landscaping improvements with the removal of overgrown shrubs and dead trees. The aged storage shed at Island Park will be removed and equipment will be transferred to a more secure space, repurposing the former Alexandria garage as a storage facility for township departments.
Fireman’s Island has become overgrown and the enclosed gazebo hampers sightlines for security and public safety. The Township and its emergency services have dealt with arson and petty crime on the island, despite access being limited to swimmers or watercraft. Staff recommended the boardwalk be reinstalled, overgrown shrubs and unsafe trees be removed, allowing for easier maintenance of the island.
Deputy Mayor Carma Williams and Councillor Michael Madden suggested keeping any healthy trees and trimming the lower branches so that the trees provide shade but do not restrict visibility. CAO Michael Fawthrop said the condition of the gazebo was beyond repair and should be removed. Council members suggested the installation of a bench on Fireman’s Island for visitors to enjoy the beautiful views at Mill Pond.
These efforts combine with recent initiatives to clear overgrown trees at the south side of Island Park. The township has partnered with the Raisin Region Conservation Authority (RRCA) for the cutting and removal of broken and dead tree branches, as well as clearing some of the undergrowth.
