BGC Cornwall/SDG celebrated the impact of its programs with an afternoon of activities during BGC Club Day at the Benson Centre.
The annual event brought together youth, volunteers, and supporters while highlighting the opportunities created through BGC programs. Activities included laser tag, Nerf battles, skating, slime-making, games, music, and other activities designed to showcase the fun and inclusive environment offered by the organization.
“Club Day is something that BGC is celebrating across the country, and really the idea behind Club Day is to highlight what’s so special about a BGC Club and the work that we do,” said Jacquie Richards, Executive Director of BGC Cornwall/SDG. “For us, this is our second year having Club Day, and really it’s a way to highlight the essence of BGC, which is creating opportunities for kids. It’s about inclusivity, it’s about investing in our young people.”
“Today is really just a day about fun. I mean, it’s all based on fun, so we have over 200 kids that we anticipate will be here today,” said Richards. “We have a wide range of activities, everything from making slime to ice cream sandwiches, to having laser tag, ice skating, and games going on.” Richards explained that BGC Cornwall/SDG serves a broad range of young people, with programming available throughout the year. “BGC is a safe place for all youth. People often ask me, what kind of kids is BGC for? If you’re a young person, then BGC is for you,” said Richards. “We have a wide range of programs that operate at different times of the year.” Programs support children and youth from ages four to 17, including after-school and summer opportunities. Richards encouraged families to learn more about available programs through the organization’s website and social media. “Essentially, when kids are not in school is when we have a range of programs,” Richards added.
BGC Cornwall/SDG also highlighted feedback from youth demonstrating the impact of its programs. According to the organization, 96 per cent of youth said they have more people they enjoy spending time with because of the club, while 97 per cent said they feel like they matter to more people. The results also showed 98 per cent of youth reported taking initiative, 95 per cent felt more confident in their abilities, and 92 per cent felt more confident about their futures. Additionally, 97 per cent said they were more excited to try new things, 93 per cent felt they had a positive influence on others, and 89 per cent said they were more comfortable leading.
Richards also thanked community partners, including M&M Food Market, for supporting the celebration by providing food during the event.
