The Editor,
Most people who know me are aware that I have a soft spot for anything that involves youth. I have been involved in many things that support youth in our communities for many decades. One of my proudest achievements is the Cornwall Youth Space at Alexander Park in Cornwall.
This started as a conversation between myself, Cst. Casey MacGregor and Sgt. Scott Coulter, who has since retired. We were attending the touch a truck event together and we started a conversation about teens having no place to belong. We were able to get the right people together and we pitched the concept to Cornwall city council where we received unanimous support for the project. We moved forward and were able to team up with some amazing people, including a great team of teens who help guide us. In true Cornwall fashion our community stepped up and donated material or funds to accomplish our goal. Many years later, we are almost ready to hand it over to the City of Cornwall as a pilot project for many communities. May 30 will be the official grand opening. We are proud of what we did as a team.
That’s the good. Unfortunately there is also some bad stuff to talk about. Our awesome new park, which has a gazebo, quiet spaces, new basketball court, ping pong table, chess tables, outdoor gym, bicycle repair station, graffiti wall and more. We are so proud, but there are some who want to destroy the park that was built by youth for youth. Our park has been vandalized over and over to the point that the punching bag that was there has been destroyed and we cannot replace it.
We need your help to save our park. Somebody knows who is doing this. We need it to stop. We need your help to have eyes on our park. Are you going down 9th Street or 8th Street? Have a look, keep an eye on the park made for youth, by youth. We are proud of our park but we need your help. Cornwall has always come through when the chips are down and now I need your help. Please help our youth. The park is always busy so the concept is working. Please help us help others.
