Around 500 people gathered in Lamoureux Park on Labour Day as the Cornwall and District Labour Council (CDLC) hosted its annual picnic, celebrating union victories and the continued fight for workers’ rights. Families enjoyed live music from Trevor Walsh, food, a trackless train, and bouncy castles, while local unions and advocacy groups shared resources and messages of solidarity.
“We need to work on union density,” said CDLC President Louise Lanctot. “Hopefully, more in the service industry will see that the union is their only protection in this society now.”
Elaine MacDonald, recording secretary of the CDLC, emphasized the importance of collective action. “Air Canada workers, who were unionized, resisted unpaid labour and held out-and their fight benefitted all workers.”
Jeremy Rose, president of CUPW Local 522, added, “If you have healthcare, job training, or good work, it’s because unions held governments accountable. Labour Day reminds us these gains are still being fought for.”
As children laughed and music played, the event stood as a reminder: when workers stand together, they have a stronger voice and can advocate for change.
