By Nolan Quinn, MPP Stormont-Dundas-South Glengarry
Across Stormont, Dundas, and South Glengarry, we come together each year on Remembrance Day to honour our veterans and service members who have served, and continue to serve our country with courage, dedication, and pride. It is a time to reflect on their sacrifices, express our enduring gratitude for the freedoms they’ve defended, and pay tribute to all those who stand in service today.
At the heart of our region’s proud military history is the SDG Highlanders. On June 6, 1944, the Highlanders stormed Juno Beach as part of the D-Day invasion, fighting with unwavering courage through unimaginable conditions. Their bravery and determination helped secure victory in Europe and changed the course of history.
Today, the SDG Highlanders continue to serve with distinction, upholding the legacy of those who came before them. They remind us that remembrance is not only about the past, but also about supporting and honouring those who wear the uniform today.
I also want to extend my heartfelt thanks to all the incredible Royal Canadian Legions across our region for the vital work they do in supporting veterans, current service members, and their families and our communities. This includes their organization of the memorial services each year at our local cenotaphs, which ensure that the courage and sacrifices of our veterans are honoured and never forgotten. Their dedication keeps the spirit of remembrance and community strong year after year.
As we bow our heads in silence this Remembrance Day, let us remember the heroes who gave so much, including those who made the ultimate sacrifice to defend our freedom. Their courage continues to inspire our communities and strengthen the bonds that unite us as Canadians.
Lest we forget.
